About this course

Most developers build websites that quietly exclude people — not out of malice, but because they were never taught how not to. This course fixes that. You'll learn to build web pages and applications that everyone can use, whatever their ability, device, or situation: people using screen readers, keyboards, magnification, voice control, or simply a broken mouse in bright sunlight.

This is a hands-on specialization, taught by a blind software developer. Throughout, you'll hear how a page actually sounds through a screen reader — the difference between markup that works and markup that shuts people out. You'll master semantic HTML, ARIA (and when not to use it), keyboard and focus management, accessible components, and how to test and audit your own work against WCAG.

Accessibility is a rare, in-demand, well-paid specialization — increasingly required by law and by the organisations developers most want to work for. By the end you'll be able to build accessible interfaces from scratch and audit an existing site, finishing with a real accessibility report you can show an employer or client.

Before you start: this course assumes you can already write HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript. If you're newer than that, take our Build a Portfolio Website or Full-Stack Web Development: Zero to Job-Ready course first, then come back to specialize.

What you'll learn

  • Build web pages and components that work for screen reader, keyboard, and voice users
  • Write semantic HTML and use ARIA correctly — knowing when not to use it at all
  • Make any interface fully keyboard-operable with correct focus management
  • Test and audit a website with a screen reader, the keyboard, and automated tools
  • Meet WCAG in practice and produce a professional accessibility audit report
